I stayed at The Walls at the end of my fifth day of cycling on my Lands End to John O’Groats ride in February 2019.
I was immediately made to feel most welcome by the owners, Stephen and Louise, who stowed my bike securely in an outbuilding. They showed me around the facilities and whisked my sticky, slimy drinks bottles away to be put through the dishwasher and returned filled. There were many snacks and drinks (alcoholic and non) available to purchase from the guest room at very reasonable prices – not the mini bar prices travellers normally face. In the room there was a kettle and a range of complimentary teas and coffees with biscuits (that made very good pocket food for the hungry cyclist the following day).
I stayed in the Tweed room, which was a delight. It had been furnished in perfect keeping with the character of the building – of an older age but graced with a modern, contemporary feel. It was old style opulence with built in state of the art fittings. The TV was larger than my own at home and the en suite was luxurious and offered a lot of hot water – a cyclists main priority after a long day in the saddle 🙂
The location is ideal, right on the river, and very quiet. I slept like a baby. Actually, that is not true – I didn’t wake screaming 3 times in the night – but you get the idea. It is a shame really that I arrived after dark and left before first light becasue it felt like there was a great view from the window.
Stephen was a true gent and rose early so that I could breakfast at 6:30am. There was a good range of cereals, yogurts etc on offer in addition to a specially prepared fruit salad, which really cleared my pallette and set me up for the scrambled eggs and parma ham on toasted muffin to follow. It was truly delicious and Stephen was able to help fill my mind with some local history and knowledge after I told him my wife’s ancestors had been Freemen of Berwick back in the 19th Century.
I really am sorry that I arrived so late and had to leave so early from what was a remarkable B&B.
