Kings Arms 3

My Son and I stayed here at the end of our 8th day’s cycling on a Lands End to John O’Groats charity tandem ride at the beginning of June 2019.

Let’s just say that after hauling a heavily laden tandem up over Shap Fell from the Kendal side it was a much needed place to stay.

The tandem was secured in an outbuilding around the back of the pub and our room was over part of the bar.  The room itself was clean and nicely furnished with an ensuite.  It provided for all our needs and enabled us to refresh after a long day in the saddle and wash and organise our kit ready for the next day.

We ate in the bar/restaurant both going for ballast in the form of burgers, which were excellent.  The bar was fairly noisy but that was a matter of timing: we had arrived on the evening of the UEFA Champions League Final between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.  The landlord was a lifelong Liverpool fan and all the locals had gathered to support him and his team.

Unfortunately our room was directly above the huge flat screen TV and things became progressively raucous as the beer flowed.  Fortunately my son was completely knackered by this stage of our ride and zonked out without being effected by the noise. Which, in fairness, was not that bad except when the goals went in for Liverpool (2-0).

All praise to the licensing laws and a good landlord who saw the crowd off to ‘the beds they had to go home to’ pretty promptly after 11pm. And all praise to the very comfortable beds.

The restaurant/bar was considerably quieter the next morning where we enjoyed a two part breakfast with cereals and cooked.

All in all a good place to stay and in other circumstances the atmosphere in the bar in the evening would have been great.  Well, it was great – I was just tired 🙂
